Pet of the Week for January 18, 2025
Are you ready for the queen of little black cats? Licorice has that imperious air of a monarch. And like the candy she’s named for, not everyone’s going to instantly fall in love with Licorice. She’s a spicy girl, especially at first. But give her a chance.

She’s very interested in people and will likely become quite friendly after just a few minutes of getting to know you. You’ll know you’ve made the grade when she rolls over to show you her tummy.
Licorice is one of the many cats being cared for by Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter. FAAS is trying to make room for more cats coming in from the Los Angeles fire disasters. (The organization is scheduled to take some in this week!) Adopting a currently available cat will help clear the shelter for those who have survived the wildfires and desperately need a loving home. (Taking in a dog would also be a godsend.)

As FAAS CEO John L. Lipp wrote in a newsletter this week: “If you’ve been thinking of fostering or adopting one of our animals, this would be an incredible time to do so. What a beautiful act of love it would be to take in a FAAS resident so we can help animals from the Los Angeles area. If we get enough dogs out of the shelter and into homes, we’ll have the capacity to house some dogs—something badly needed.”
You can meet lovely Licorice Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter’s South Shore Adoption Center, 2228 South Shore, Alameda.
