The Alameda Post received a copy of this letter to the Mayor, City Attorney, and City Council.
To the Editor:
On behalf of the Alameda Floating Home Association, I am writing to extend our heartfelt congratulations to the Alameda City Attorney’s Office on receiving the 2025 American Bar Association’s Hodson Award [2]—an exceptional and well-deserved national honor.
This prestigious recognition not only affirms the Office’s legal excellence but also acknowledges your team’s unwavering commitment to equity, justice, and community preservation. For our small but vibrant community of floating home residents, this award holds profound significance.
In 2021, when our homes were threatened by drastic and unjust rent hikes, you acted with decisive leadership and moral clarity. The ordinance you crafted and defended by the Attorney’s Office provided critical protections for over 41 households, many of whom faced imminent displacement. Your successful litigation and the resulting permanent injunction brought both relief and justice to our community—and, importantly, set a powerful precedent for safeguarding vulnerable tenants.
This award from the ABA confirms what we in Barnhill Marina [3] have known all along: the City of Alameda is served by an exceptional legal team dedicated not only to sound governance but to compassion and fairness. We are grateful beyond words for your efforts and proud to see your work recognized on a national stage.
Please accept our sincere thanks and congratulations. The Barnhill Marina community is proud to call Alameda home—and prouder still of the leaders who uphold its values.
With deepest appreciation,
Rick Minnis, President,
Alameda Floating Home Association
