Late fee charged after the deadline
The first installment of the 2023-2024 secured property tax bill will become delinquent after 5 p.m. today, Monday, December 11. A 10% late-payment penalty will be added if not paid by the deadline, according to a notice issued by Alameda County Assessor Phong La.
Contrary to popular belief, the Assessor’s Office does not collect property taxes. All property taxes are paid to the Alameda County Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office, located at 1221 Oak Street, Room 131, in Oakland. You can get information about your property taxes, payment status, submit a payment, or get answers to frequently asked questions at the Alameda County Tax Collector [2] website or by phone at 510-272-6800.
Penalty is charged on all late postmarks. Property owners are encouraged to pay their property taxes safely using any of the following non-contact options:
- Mail a check to Alameda County Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office, 1221 Oak St, Oakland CA 94612. Make sure it is postmarked by the United States Postal Services (USPS) on or before December 11, 2023.
- Pay online either by eCheck (free of charge) or credit card with a convenience fee of 2.5% at the Alameda County Property Tax Payment [3] website.
- Pay by phone with a credit card using the automated system at 510-272-6800. Select option 1 after the greeting and follow the prompts.
- Pay through your bank bill payment service. This must be done well before December 11 to allow your bank’s processing system enough time to process your request and mail the payment to the Tax Collector’s office; use your parcel number or tracer number to identify your property.
- Do not send cash payments. Please use a personal check or obtain a cashier’s check or money order and mail immediately. You can also wire your payment electronically; get more information at the Alameda County Property Tax Wire Transfer [4] web page.
- Use the drop box at the entrance of the Treasurer-Tax Collector’s Office at 1221 Oak St. in Oakland. The drop box is available to the public Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding County holidays.
- Use the mail slot in the Hayward Business License office, located at 224 W. Winton Ave, Room 169 in Hayward. The office is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding County holidays.
