As You Like It performances to benefit Alameda Food Bank
Summer is here, and it’s time for outdoor theater productions. Coming soon to the Healing Garden [1] is none other than As You Like It, William Shakespeare’s witty 17th century rom-com that pits brother against brother, to be staged by Alameda’s community theater troupe, The Foodbank Players [2].
Performances of As You Like It are set for July 7, 13, 14, 20 and 21 [4] in the Healing Garden, 1435 Webster Street, at 2 p.m. Admission is free, but donations to the Alameda Food Bank [5] will be happily accepted. Seating is first-come, first-served. The shows are outdoors and there’s little shade. Dress for the weather, which on this island always means wear or bring layers.
And now, a little preview.
Welcome to the Woods of Will Shakespeare
Welcome to this fairy blessed place,
Hear the song of hope in our voices,
And see the looks of love on our face,
Our story starts at court with frustration,
Born of jealous freshly green,
Brother versus brother unpleasant,
Hurt people being hurtfully mean,
But then two people meet unexpected,
And with one look they know in their hearts,
That something beautiful is beginning,
And that’s how healing finally starts,
Come along while we play out this sweet story,
Of Rosalind and her Orlando,
And how his rhymes put up on the tree,
Was how their love doth started to grow.
The Foodbank Players [6] are sponsored by All Good Living [7], Santoro’s [8], Alameda County Arts Commission [9], Alameda Food Bank [10], Alameda Post, Daisy’s [11], West End Arts District [12], and the West Alameda Business Association [13].
