A Million Reasons to Love Vermilion

Pet of the Week for March 16, 2024

Want love forever from a great big cuddler who is one of the sweetest big guys on the planet but thinks he’s a lap dog? Vermilion has won the hearts of everyone at FAAS and will surely win yours.

He’s affectionate, smart, fun, loves life, loves people, and is good with other dogs—even though he doesn’t engage that much.  Vermilion lives with joy in his giant Saint Bernard-ish heart. (A DNA test revealed that while Vermillion looks like a Saint Bernard, he’s a mix of a lot of different breeds. So, he’s not a Saint Bernard, but Saint Bernard-ish.)

He’s house-trained, knows basic obedience, loves giving his paw, and even enjoys going into dog-friendly stores and dining at dog-friendly restaurants in Alameda.

This 2-year-old loves to go for rides in the car. In fact, the driver’s seat is his favorite place, but since he doesn’t have his driver’s license, he’s happy to lumber into the back seat.

Getting him out of the car at the shelter after adventuring around Alameda is another story, however. All 95 pounds of him stays firmly planted, and it takes a lot of coaxing—and  sometimes a couple of people—to get him out.

As much love as staff and volunteers give him, he wants to go home to a real home, not a shelter.

A few months ago, someone adopted him, and he had what everyone thought would be a one-way trip out of the shelter. Staff at FAAS were thrilled, though they missed the gentle giant. His new owner was over the moon about him and loved him to bits.

Sadly, due to circumstances beyond her control—nothing to do with Vermillion—after several weeks his adopter was no longer able to keep him, try as she might. It broke her heart to bring him back, and it tore up staff’s hearts a little, too.

Vermillion is more than ready for a one-way car ride to a loving forever home. You can visit him at the FAAS main shelter, 1590 Fortmann Way, from noon to 4 p.m. any day but Monday. If it seems like a match, you can fill out an adoption form on his bio [4]. And if you have any questions, please call 510-337-8565.
