To the Editor:
The Italian American League (IAL) had a special social dinner on June 20 to honor winners of two Scholarships.
The selection committee, made up of Lynn Perata, Amy Ratto, Deanie Donato, and Ken Shelby, worked through applications of family members of our IAL members. We evaluated the applications on criteria including academics, leadership, community service, and extracurricular activities. We also want to thank Garrett Garitano for all his help keeping our website up to date.
Our exceptional two winners are Hayley Britton and Isabel Marie Haslam. They each received $2,000 to help with their education.
One of Hayley’s most notable extracurricular activities was being among the first young women to earn the rank of Eagle Scouts of America. Hayley is currently pursuing a degree in business with an emphasis in entrepreneurship, and plans to build a career in real estate. Along the way, she has challenged herself professionally by becoming a personal trainer, stepping outside her comfort zone. Hayley has learned that success is built through consistency, hard work and self-belief.
Isabel distinguished herself as president of the Respect Life Club, as an athlete, a camp counselor, and as a volunteer at a food bank. As a leader among her peers, she has earned the respect of classmates, teammates, and mentors alike. Whether competing on the cross-country course, participating in track and field, volunteering in her community, or serving as a mentor and counselor to younger students, Isabel consistently leads by example. Isabel is always more eager to serve than to be served.
Sadly, they were unable to attend the dinner but their grandparents Jeff and Linda Britton and Ken Haslam were able to attend and accepted their awards in their place.
Lynn Perata,
