“The opportunity to serve on the Policy Makers Council ensures that Alameda Municipal Power [4] and other public power providers have a voice in energy issues of national importance,” McKenna said. “I look forward to participating and advocating for legislation that shapes the future of public power.”

Public power utilities like AMP serve more than 49 million customers and employ more than 93,000 people nationwide.

The Policy Makers Council is made up of local leaders from public power communities and APPA member organizations across the country. Its mission is to assist in promoting federal policies that are important to public power utilities nationwide, such as climate policy, grid security, energy infrastructure investments, and preserving local control.

AMP General Manager Nico Procos said the utility is honored to have McKenna on the Policy Makers Council “to champion issues that are critically important to the public power sector.” He called the appointment “a reflection of the leadership and depth of knowledge Ms. McKenna brings to the energy industry and to our municipal utility.”

McKenna has served as a board member since July 2021. For the past two decades, she has worked as an instructor, trainer, and consultant for energy companies and public agencies across the United States. Her expertise includes issues pertaining to utility operations, energy efficiency, regulatory management, and energy market restructuring.

The 45-member council will meet at least twice a year and will participate in meetings with elected officials and congressional staff to support the APPA’s national legislative agenda. McKenna’s term begins this month.
