Final striping on Central Avenue between Fifth and Sherman streets is anticipated to be completed by the end of this month (November). Parking will be prohibited in some areas as the contractor prepares the street for striping. The City asks all drivers to be observant and obey all posted signage.
[1]Once signage and striping are installed, the vehicle lanes and bike lanes will be substantially complete in that section, with the exception of traffic signal improvements, which are expected to be installed early 2026.
What’s the goal? According to the City of Alameda’s Central Avenue Safety Project [2] webpage, Central Avenue is being reduced from two lanes in each direction to one lane in each direction, and a two-way low-stress cycle track for bikes is being installed on the south side (side closer to the Bay) from Main Street to Eighth Street near Washington Park. In front of the park, there will be a new transit island for getting on and off buses more safely. East of Eighth Street, there will be conventional one-way bike lanes on both sides of the street, like the lanes on Encinal Avenue east of Sherman Street.
Upcoming paving work
Paving the top layer of asphalt on Central Avenue from Lincoln Avenue to Fifth Street is scheduled to take place Monday, November 24, through Wednesday, November 26. Temporary and permanent striping will be installed during the following two weeks.
Parking on Central Avenue
As of November 12, the following parking conditions are in effect along Central Avenue:
- Lincoln Avenue to Fifth Street – Street parking is not permitted. Two-way traffic has resumed.
- Fifth Street to Sherman Street – Street parking is restricted in some areas during construction hours due to striping work. Check for details on “No Parking” signs.
Street closures
Stage 3 Construction involves temporary closure at the intersection of Central Avenue/Pacific Avenue/Main Street while the roundabout is built. The Main Street Soccer Field and the businesses at 1930 Main Street remain open during construction. Local traffic to these locations will be allowed to travel south from West Atlantic Avenue or Ralph Appezzato Parkway. (See the Detour Map.) This final stage of construction is expected to end in Spring 2026, subject to delays due to weather and other unforeseen circumstances.
