The Alameda Police Department released its crime statistics report for the month of September 2023 to the public on Friday, October 13. Most data points were consistent with or slightly lower than previous months.
[1]APD September Statistics

- Calls for service: This number dropped significantly from the previous month, with almost 11% fewer calls received during the month of September, while reports taken increased slightly.
- Arrests: Although arrests had dropped off in August—down to 51 from 81 in July—APD officers arrested 70 individuals in September. Of those, only two are juveniles. 28 of September’s arrests were for felony charges.
- Auto thefts: The city saw 12 fewer auto thefts in September than in August, and recovered 16 fewer stolen vehicles, but numbers remain much higher than earlier in the year, and more than double the rate this time last year. There have been a total of 877 auto theft reports this year, through the end of September.
- Other numbers: Officers recorded 208 theft reports, 115 of which involved a value of $400 or less, and 20 burglaries during the month. There were 46 cases of vandalism reported, and three arrests were made for driving under the influence.

Other incidents of note
- Hit-and-run collisions: On September 6, at 5:34 a.m., officers responded to the intersection of Oak Street and Clement Avenue for the report of a hit-and-run collision involving a pedestrian and a vehicle. The pedestrian was treated for non-life-threatening injuries at the scene and declined further treatment. The investigation remains ongoing.
- Barricaded subject: On September 13 at 8:26 a.m., officers responded to the 400 block of Stardust Place for a trespassing incident. Once on scene, officers encountered a barricaded subject inside of a vehicle, possibly holding another person against their will. APD’s Critical Incident Response Team was called to help with negotiations. At 3:50 p.m., officers peacefully resolved the incident. An Alameda resident was taken into custody for outstanding warrants and a restraining order violation.
- Carjacking: On September 21 at 4:20 a.m., officers responded to a carjacking in the 2600 block of San Jose Avenue. Two subjects demanded the victim’s property at gunpoint and fled in the victim’s vehicle. The victim’s vehicle was recovered an hour later. Evidence located in the victim’s car is being processed. The investigation remains ongoing.
- Robbery: On September 23 at 7:18 a.m., officers responded to Bank of America at the South Shore Shopping Center for the report of an armed robbery. While using the ATM, the victim was approached by an unknown subject who demanded the victim’s money. The victim complied with the demands and the suspect left the scene. The investigation remains ongoing.
- Homicide investigation update: On July 20 at 3:24 p.m., officers located human remains along the shoreline near the Bay Farm Island Bridge. Based on initial findings of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office Coroner’s Bureau, the death was being investigated as a homicide. On September 6, a Pleasanton resident was taken into custody. A joint investigation will continue with the Alameda and Pleasanton Police Departments.
- Carjacking investigation update: On August 12 at 12:15 a.m., officers responded to a carjacking in the 700 block of Taylor Avenue. Four subjects demanded the victim’s property at knifepoint and fled in the victim’s vehicle. On September 28, an Alameda resident was taken into custody for their role in the crime. The investigation remains ongoing.
- Traffic enforcement: APD officers issued 141 traffic citations and 152 warnings.
