APD Arrests Burglary Suspect After Child Calls to Report Intruder

Children to be honored for bravery at APD award ceremony

Last week, a child’s brave 911 call led to the quick arrest of a burglary suspect in the 2800 block of San Diego Road on Alameda Point. According to an Alameda Police Department (APD) report [1] on Facebook, the child was awakened by the sound of someone trying to enter their home just after 3 a.m.

The child, who “stayed calm, hid, and called for help,” didn’t know the exact address, so APD dispatchers stayed on the line to figure out the location, the report stated.

While the call was taking place, other family members woke up and confronted the intruder. Another child then spoke to dispatchers, providing additional details.

“Within minutes, officers arrived and found the suspect hiding in a nearby yard,” APD stated. “Nothing was taken from the home, and the person was arrested without further incident and transported to Santa Rita Jail.”

One resident was treated by Alameda Fire Department for a minor cut after stepping on broken glass.

“Although incidents of this nature are rare in the City of Alameda,” APD said, “we want to commend the two children for their courage and teamwork, which played a crucial role in bringing the incident to a quick resolution.”

In recognition of their bravery and actions, the children who made the call will be honored at an upcoming APD award ceremony.
