At its annual ceremony on March 26, the 2026 East Bay Innovation Awards [1], known as the Academy Awards of East Bay business, celebrated 41 honorees that continue to exemplify regional excellence. Alameda’s Anthro Energy [2] was honored with a Technology award for revolutionizing the battery industry with safer and cleaner energy storage design, and Rhythmix Cultural Works [3] was honored with a Community Impact award for providing high-quality music, dance, and theater programming, including offering free and low-cost performances to East Bay youth.
[4]Hosted by the East Bay Economic Development Alliance [6] (East Bay EDA), the Innovation Awards have honored companies and organizations for groundbreaking work across Alameda and Contra Costa counties since 2013.
The 2026 awards ceremony, held at the Henry J. Kaiser Center for the Arts in Oakland, was hosted by Emmy Award-winning NBC Bay Area news anchor and reporter Gia Vang [7], co-founder of the Very Asian Foundation [8], who has led efforts to combat racism and create change for AANHPI communities.
This year’s 41 honorees continue to exemplify why the East Bay is unique among the nine-county Bay Area, according to a report in the San Francisco Business Times [9]. The awardees are also among the most geographically diverse since the program’s inception. They are grouped into seven subregions, including North, South, and Central Alameda County; East, West, and Central Contra Costa County; and the Tri-Valley.
“In the East Bay, there are unique geographies that support and develop industry clusters,” East Bay EDA Executive Director Stephen Baiter told the Business Times. “The symbiotic relationship between industry, talent, and economic development from cities and our counties helps these networks thrive and evolve, resulting in the exceptional companies and organizations that will be celebrated this year.”
In addition to the 41 awardees honored at the 2026 ceremony, Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART [10]) was this year’s Legacy Awardee. The transit system was selected for its combined legacy of innovation, such as being the first in the region in high-speed electric rail, to continued innovations in transit-oriented development and regional infrastructure. Past legacy honorees include Bayer, Cal State East Bay, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, UC Berkeley, and the Port of Oakland.
