The Alameda Education Foundation [1] (AEF) announced that it has chosen long-time Alameda resident Julia Owens to be its new executive director, following the planned retirement of AEF’s previous director, Vicki Sedlack [2].
[3]Owens brings more than 20 years of experience in nonprofit management to this important role. To ensure a smooth transition, Owens will benefit from an overlap period with Sedlack, who will be mentoring her in the coming weeks.
“I am thrilled to join the Alameda Education Foundation and to step into a role that has such a positive impact on the students and families of Alameda,” Owens said in a message posted on the AEF website [4]. “Having lived here for many years and volunteered in our schools and local organizations, I’ve witnessed the incredible strength of our community. I’m excited to continue building on these connections and to work alongside all of you to create even more opportunities for our students to thrive.”
Owens, the parent of two students within the Alameda Unified School District (AUSD), has a deep understanding of the local education system and the needs of Alameda’s students. She has been an active volunteer with organizations such as the Alameda Warming Shelter and Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter (FAAS), contributing her time and energy to improve the lives of others. Her work with local Parent-Teacher Associations (PTAs) has further deepened her connection to the educational community.
The Alameda Education Foundation has long been a vital resource for AUSD, providing support for enrichment programs, sports, teacher grants, and mental health initiatives. With a dedicated board, staff, and network of engaged supporters, AEF has consistently played a key role in ensuring that all students have access to the tools they need to succeed.
“AEF has an outstanding reputation for enriching the lives of students in Alameda,” said Board President Kelly Scott. “I know that Julia will be a great asset to this dynamic team and continue the foundation’s important work. As with Vicki, Julia is committed to fostering a culture of collaboration, connection, and shared purpose as we work to create meaningful change and lasting impact.”
In addition to her nonprofit expertise, Owens is passionate about creating and nurturing strong relationships between staff, donors, and the broader community, according to a statement issued by AEF.. She looks forward to working closely with local partners to build on the foundation’s legacy and expand opportunities for students across the district.
“I believe that together, we can make a significant difference in the lives of Alameda’s students, families, and schools,” Owens said. “I am excited to roll up my sleeves and work with all of you to continue the important work of the Alameda Education Foundation.”
