Alameda Sings!, also known as Alameda Community Chorus, will perform bright, classic, and warm melodies at their spring concert, “A Grand Night for Singing,” on Saturday, April 18. Co-hosted by Alameda Recreation and Parks Department, the concert starts at 7:30 p.m. (doors open at 7 p.m.) at the Alameda Veterans Memorial Building, 2203 Central Avenue.
Leading the chorus for the first time will be new Artistic Director Ken Rawdon, known for serving as the vocal music director at Mt. Eden High School in Hayward, where he taught for 30 years, with his choirs featured at many conventions and conferences. He has won several awards, including Choir Music Educator of the year, and recently served on the California state board of the American Choral Directors association. His choirs have performed in New York City at Carnegie Hall and at the Alice Tully Performance Hall at Lincoln Center.
“This spring season the chorus has been such a pleasure to work with,” Rawdon said. “We have been working hard to bring Alameda a lively concert filled with celebrations of music and singing.”
Rawdon will be accompanied by gifted pianist Merrill Collins, who is an award-winning composer as well as producer and CEO of her indie label, Spiraling Music. Composed of talented community singers, the Alameda Sings! chorus will perform bright and lively songs full of the message of the joy of singing.
“Alameda Sings! continues to focus on the love and need for choral education and performance opportunities,” said the group’s president Jo Lowe. “This season is no exception. With the wonderful direction of our new director Ken, the chorus has been able to learn a variety of styles of music that bring the joy of singing to life. We are truly a community nonprofit welcoming partnerships, donors, and volunteers that share our desire to support pathways for Bay Area singers and musicians.”
The family-friendly spring concert suggests a donation at the door of $10 or more. Donations help choral music thrive in our community. For more information, special appearances, or interest in becoming a volunteer, email [email protected] [2], call 415-302-9802, or visit Alameda Sings! [3] online.
