Application deadline May 7
Local high school students who hope to find a part-time summer job that provides useful work experience and looks great on a resume or college application have just a few days to apply for a paid summer internship [1] with the City of Alameda. The deadline is Thursday, May 7.
[2]Interns will be placed in one of the City’s departments and work alongside City staff. Departments with internship positions available include:
- Base Reuse & Economic Development Department. Support the team in coordinating initiatives for residential projects and community engagement meetings. Help organize and research historic files and documents related to Alameda Point.
- City Attorney’s Office. Assist with updating law books, reviewing insurance documents, and possibly attending a court hearing.
- City Manager’s Office, Housing and Human Services. Support community projects such as harm reduction and substance abuse training, shadow homeless outreach and case management services, learn government processes, and complete administrative tasks.
- Finance Department. Assist with organizing financial records, updating databases, and conducting basic research, data entry, helping with paperwork, and supporting team members with administrative tasks.
- Alameda Fire Department. Intern should be interested in becoming a firefighter or have interest in the fire service or emergency management. Tasks will include assisting with ISO information collection.
- Human Resources Department. Duties may include Employee Appreciation Picnic preparation, Open Enrollment preparation, HR website updates and maintenance, and creating a slide deck on HR roles, functions, and purposes.
- Information Technology Department. Hands-on experience in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), including 3D modeling in GIS, digitizing new GIS data sets, and creating Dashboards, web maps and web applications in Arc GIS Online.
- Alameda Police Department. Working in pairs, interns will rotate through four to six departments within the Police Department. Duties may include shadowing a crime scene analyst, working with the Community Outreach Department, observing dispatch, and completing administrative duties.
- Alameda Municipal Power. Follow an electrical project through its full lifecycle, from initial design to final energization; work alongside the engineering team on active projects; shadow and observe alongside lineman, inspectors, and engineers to see how electrical infrastructure is built, maintained, and operated in a public utility setting—and much more.
- Rent Program. Projects will primarily involve working with the Alameda Rent Registry, verifying and updating information, assisting Rent Program staff in annual registration entry, and notifying new property owners of the City’s regulations.

Pay rate for the internships will be the City’s minimum wage of $17.76 per hour, pending City Council approval. Interns may work up to 100 hours over the summer.
To be eligible for this program, applicants must live or attend a school in Alameda, be at least 16 years old, and be able to obtain a valid school work permit.

Those who are applying on the City’s online job application page for the first time will need to create an account with a unique user name and password, and a unique email address.
Applicants may apply for internships in more than one department on the same application, but must provide a short explanation about why they are interested in each department (supplemental questions).
Interviews, orientation, work dates
After applications are reviewed, qualified applicants will be interviewed by departments.
Those departmental interviews will be scheduled between May 18 and June 3.
Applicants who are selected for internships must attend an in-person onboarding orientation as scheduled. The orientations are currently scheduled for Wednesday, June 10.
Interns will start work on June 8 and work through July 13, as scheduled.
