Stand up for voting rights

Alameda Post - Letters to the Editor [1]

To the Editor:

August 6 was the 61st anniversary of the Voting Rights Act (VRA) of 1965. The VRA was a pivotal piece of legislation which addressed years of abuse by state legislators. It was a vital step towards establishing the true democracy promised by the Declaration of Independence.

Sadly, the fight for fundamental rights is never over. Recent Supreme Court decisions have vitiated the VRA, and legislatures in several states have seized the opportunity to impose new obstacles for voters.

We must stand up for democracy, for voting rights, for human rights—for the truth. And it is a truth which should be self-evident, that all men and women are created equal and endowed by their creator with the right to liberty, equality, and the pursuit of happiness.

President, League of Women Voters of Alameda
