To the Editor:

This is in regard to Ms. Bruhn’s comments in the Alameda Post’s coverage of the No Kings rally ^[2] in Alameda on Saturday, March 28, 2026.

As much as I am against the petition to stop the Billionaires tax (I support a tax and hope to vote for one), I think it is ironic that Bruhn, who marches against tyranny, attacks on free speech, etc., would think she had the right to chase off the petition gatherers on public land because she didn’t like their speech. She justified it (quote from above mentioned article): “Unless I know who’s backing that kind of stuff, I can’t allow it.”

If I didn’t know better, it could be a quote from this administration. Who has the right to say who can petition the people?

The fact that only three people out of a reported 2,500 attendees at the rally signed the petitions (maybe they were signed before, who knows) showed that the people didn’t need Bruhn’s undemocratic intervention. How cynical and how little faith she had in the folks who came to rally in the name of democracy. By the way, YES! The billionaires are paying for the anti-billionaires tax. But you can’t hide that, Ms. Bruhn. This was an opportunity to sunshine it…like a champion for democracy would do. “Turn back Citizens United” would have been a great teaching moment.

This is not a small issue. It is THE issue. Don’t use their tactics in the name of fighting tyranny.

Finally, I know you mean well and you are doing more than probably most organizing, etc. Allow me to thank you for that.
