Responses to Veterans Affairs clinic location and Bear’s-Eye View

Regarding last week’s article by Richard Bangert about the proposed VA clinic at Alameda Point [1], he starts off by saying there was a “new warning about the heightened risk of liquefaction in Alameda.” This makes it sound like there has been a new study of earthquake liquefaction in Alameda. As far as I can determine from an extensive search of the USGS and other web sites, this is not the case.
Maybe he is referring to the recent, somewhat over the top, article that first ran in the Mercury News, sourced from the 2018 USGS study called the “Haywired Scenario [2],” and then picked up by, of all places, the Daily Mail of London. That said, we who live in Alameda should be aware of and prepare for the next Big One. I also trust that the VA in their plans to build at Alameda Point are also aware of the earthquake risks.
On the other hand, I have to agree with Mr. Bangert that the VA should consider a different site for their proposed clinic if for no other reason than aesthetics.

I typically find the “Bear’s-eye View“ posts to be amusing, but inconsequential (nothing wrong with that). This week’s [3], however, hit me emotionally, sadly.
[4]There are (or at least have been) a pair of ducks that have wintered here for as long as I’ve lived in this apartment building near the Paden School. It was always a pleasure to see them in the pool. But they have not been able to use the pool this winter, because despite Alameda’s having a grand total of maybe five pool-friendly days a year, the building management have decided to fix up the pool rather than deal with the overwhelming trash issues. Thus, it’s been empty. As a result, the ducks haven’t been around much this winter.
Indeed, about a week ago, I saw the male, but wondered where his girlfriend was. I hope I’m wrong, but I think now I know. One fewer mundane pleasure in my life.
So let me say to my neighbors, please, please respect and be careful of our nonhuman neighbors. They have as much right to live in Alameda as we do.
