APD officers responded to the report of a carjacking at Doolittle Drive and Island Drive on Tuesday, March 25, at 8:30 p.m. The reporting party alleged that they were forced off the road by the driver of another vehicle, were threatened with a weapon, and that their vehicle was stolen by two suspects who fled the scene.

APD officers conducted an extensive search of the area and were unable to locate a vehicle, suspects, or any evidence to corroborate the reported incident. APD officers continued their investigation and discovered video evidence revealing that the carjacking report was fabricated. The reporting party was arrested and taken into custody for filing a false police report and committing insurance fraud.

“Incidents like this, while thankfully rare in Alameda, understandably cause concern within our community,” stated Police Chief Nishant Joshi [3]. “Our officers acted swiftly and thoroughly to expose the fabrication and ensure the individual responsible is held accountable.”

In 2024, there was one carjacking incident in Alameda, and APD officers recovered the vehicle within two hours. The false report on March 25 was the first such incident in 2025.

Alameda continues to experience a downward trend in crime, according to APD statistics. In 2024, there was an overall 13% reduction in crime, accompanied by a 23% increase in arrests [4]. These trends have continued in 2025.
