On Tuesday, May 5, Alameda Police Department [1] (APD) responded to a road rage incident near Broadway and Otis Drive. During a dispute, one driver made verbal threats, while the other brandished a knife, according to an APD report [2] on Facebook. The driver used the knife to deflate the other motorist’s tire before fleeing the scene.
[3]“Thanks to detailed information provided by callers, officers were able to locate the suspect and their vehicle in the 1600 block of Hibbard Street within minutes,” APD stated. One driver was arrested for brandishing a weapon and felony vandalism. The other driver was cited and released for making criminal threats.
According to the report, APD officers have recently responded to multiple road rage incidents, including one last week when a driver was assaulted and pepper sprayed.
“Road rage can escalate quickly and lead to serious consequences,” APD warned. “If you find yourself in a conflict on the road, do not engage. Do not get out of your car to confront another party. It is never OK to weaponize your vehicle or engage in unsafe roadway behaviors as ‘revenge.’ Rather, create distance, stay calm, and call APD if needed. Your safety, and the safety of others, is not worth the risk or the consequences.”
For emergencies, call 9-1-1. For non-emergencies, call APD at 510-337-8340.
“People are extremely stressed and angry about so many things in this world, so ugly aggressiveness comes to the surface unfortunately,” one person commented on APD’s Facebook post. “Folks need to review and utilize their healthy coping skills! Thank you APD for helping to keep us safe.”
Some commenters blamed Alameda’s “road diet,” but others saw it differently. “Adults should be able to handle this without screaming and pulling knives on each other,” a commenter suggested. “Stop blaming the landscape for people behaving badly.”
Among the many back-and-forth comments (with a little profanity here and there), one commenter posted some everyday advice: “We live on an island. Slow down, leave earlier. If you don’t like going 25 miles an hour, don’t live here.”
