Claimed he found the safe on the side of the road
Former Alameda Unified School District (AUSD) employee Paul Borg III has been arrested and charged with burglary for allegedly stealing at least one safe from a district office, according to court records quoted in the East Bay Times [1].
[2]In addition to one count of felony burglary for the June 7 break-in, Borg, a 24-year-old Oakland resident, was charged with two felony counts of possessing a concealed weapon when police arrested him on June 23, the report stated.
Borg worked for two years as an AUSD custodian, but lost his job in 2024 amid a conflict with another employee, the record stated. He was identified as a suspect in the break-in after a privately-owned license plate reader system identified his Mercedes as being in the area at around 3 a.m. when the burglary took place. Police said the video showed Borg with another unidentified suspect breaking into a district building on Challenger Drive and stealing two safes, according to the Times report.
Police reported searching his home in June, where they found a safe that had been damaged with a sledgehammer and had a melted hole, possibly from a blowtorch.
When Borg was arrested in Emeryville, he told police he “just found a safe on the side of the road,” the report stated. Police said a gun they found in the car had last been registered in the 1960s to a Solano County resident.
Borg was charged and released by Judge Thomas Reardon, over the objections of prosecutors, in a late-June court appearance, according to court records. No further information was yet available.
