Oakland Roots Earn a Point in San Antonio

The San Antonio FC controlled most of the early portions of the soccer [1] match against the Oakland Roots SC [2] on May 4 at Toyota Park, but they never truly threatened the goal of Oakland keeper Tim Syrel as the score remained scoreless through most of the first half.

The best chance of the first half fell to the Roots and Trayvone Reid, whose curling effort in first half stoppage time was saved by San Antonio’s Pablo Sisniega, keeping the score at 0-0 heading into the halftime break.

Oakland got on the board first in the 65th minute, when Reid’s cross found Miche-Naider Chéry, who opened the scoring to give Roots a 1-0 lead. San Antonio struck back in the 73rd minute, when Juan Agudelo finished a cross into the box to level the spring at 1-1.

San Antonio took the lead when Kevon Lambert scored off another cross into the box to give the home side the advantage at 2-1. Oakland fought back as defender Thomas Camier earned a penalty for Roots. Oakland forward Johnny Rodriguez stepped up to score, once again leveling the score at 2-2 in the 84th minute.

Both sides fought it out until the end, resulting in a draw, as Oakland and San Antonio each picked up a point.

The Roots will return to the Bay Area to face MLS side San Jose Earthquakes in the Round of 32 of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Tuesday, May 7, at PayPal Park in San Jose.
