Happy St. Patrick’s Day from Mouf!

Bear’s-Eye View of Alameda for March 17, 2024

Alameda Post - Happy St. Patrick's Day from Mouf! [1]

It’s been a very busy week here at the BEV. Today is St. Patrick’s Day, and I needed to learn who this person was. According to Wikipedia [2], back in the 17th century, March 17 is the day that Saint Patrick passed away and commemorates the arrival of Christianity in Ireland.  Wiki phrased it this way:

“Christians who belong to liturgical denotations also attend church services and historically the Lenten restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol were lifted for the day, which encouraged the holiday’s tradition of ‘alcohol consumption.’”

Don’t you just love human companion customs? Special thanks to my buddy Tucker and his human companion Jan over on Morton Street for providing the timely yard decoration.

Alameda Post - Mouf supports the purchase and consumption of girl scout cookies [3]

This is also the last weekend you can purchase Girl Scout cookies. I think my human companion has bought over 20 boxes at this point. The freezer is full of cookies, but I am taking bets that they won’t last to the end of the month.

Alameda Post - a skeleton snowboarder decoration [4]

While walking along Encinal Avenue on my way to Harbor Bay Isle, I caught a shredder catching a few rays in the median. Looks to me like they are done for the season.

Alameda Post - A blooming kangaroo's paw [5]

There were some great sunny days this week, and, coupled with the rain we had earlier, they have caused Alameda landscaping to come out of its winter dormancy. The street trees are starting to put out green shoots and this kangaroo’s paw sported a new bright green flower.

Alameda Post - Mouf checks out some new sidewalk chalk art. [6]There was some unsigned sidewalk art documenting the major rains we had, and I am wondering if this mystery artist is Mabel who has had her work exhibited [7] in this block of Alameda Avenue before.

[8]I am continuing my exploration of the lagoon trails of Harbor Bay Isle. This week, I wandered along Route #3, which starts behind the UPS Store and ends at Robert Davey Jr. Drive.

Alameda Post - one of the bridges over the Harbor Bay lagoons [9]If you have been following my first [10] two [11] reports, this trail contains more of the same bridges and picturesque water scenes, but also contains a few things that are unique to the trail.

Alameda Post - a house featuring a topiary shaped like a dog [12]

Take the green dog sitting on the deck of one of the houses. I barked a hello but got no reply. They just sat there looking at me. What a strange breed!

Alameda Post - one of the trees along the Harbor Bay Isle trail that features a black band painted around it [13]Almost all the trees along the route have a black band painted on them. Does anyone know why?

Alameda Post - Some of the restaurants at the Harbor Bay Shopping Center. [14]

I suggest you head over to the trailhead around 4 p.m. and walk the trail at a leisurely pace. Then make your way back using the path along Robert Davey Jr. Drive to Island Drive and head back to the shopping center. You should arrive just in time for happy hour. Both La Penca Azul and China Village have outdoor seating that is appropriate for a canine companion.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Now, on to Easter.
