Seeking tranquility

If you are on any social media platform, you probably have seen the posts regarding all the major construction on Central Avenue (two roundabouts) and Lincoln Avenue. Additionally, there is a new sewer line being installed on Chestnut Avenue. There are posts and comments about long lines of traffic, especially before and after school.

None of these projects impacted my walking routine until last Thursday when the Chestnut Avenue project got to Central Avenue.  As we walked by the SIDEWALK CLOSED sign, my human companion yelled out in a New York accent, “I’m walking here!” I was very confused.

Over the week I watched the construction process, starting with preparing the street. NO PARKING signs need to be put up at least 48 hours before they can be enforced. Next comes the USA. No, not the country. USA stands for Underground Survey Alert. This survey involves utility companies going to the site and marking where the gas and water pipes are located. It also includes sewer lines and communication lines. Once all the utilities are located, the spot where they are to dig is marked and a big old noisy diamond blade saw is used to cut the asphalt.

Once all this prep work is done, the heavy equipment shows up and the fun really begins. A backhoe and a dump truck are the main ones—and very loud. There is a roller wheel that packs down the dirt and a cute little sweeper vehicle. Here’s hoping they move down Chestnut Street quickly.

As May comes to a close, I am starting to see those COVID era graduation congratulations signs popping up in front yards.

With all the construction activity going around me every day, I needed a rest from the noise and dust. In reviewing some old “Bear’s-Eye View” reports, I saw that there were a couple of hidden access points to San Leandro Bay. So I headed to Eastshore Drive to find a sanctuary. Along the way, I found a very large rustic doll house that could use a little TLC as well as an unusual sculpture.

As I walked up Eastshore Drive to Central Avenue, I found the path that leads to a beautiful water view. It was a great place to hang out in the early morning and share my HC’s green tea latte with oat milk and three pumps of sweetener.

In addition to some well-deserved tranquility, I also found a dedication plaque and a very cool seahorse sculpture.

I realize it’s a week away, but I wanted to let you know that the 10-day forecast shows that next Friday and Saturday will be HOT!

Plan accordingly.
