Alameda Islanders Win Special Olympics Swim Medals

The Alameda Islanders won thirteen gold medals and four silver medals at the Special Olympics Northern California [1] Swimming Regional on Saturday, May 13, at Mills College in Oakland. Teams from cities in Alameda, Contra Costa, San Francisco, Solano, Sonoma, and Mendocino counties participated.

Opening ceremonies were followed by the Special Olympics Athlete Oath: “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.”  The Oakland Fire Department served as timers for the swim meet.

In the spirit of competition and sportsmanship, Special Olympians competed in a variety of different swimming skills in both the shallow and full-length pools. The Oakland Fire Department served as timers for the swim meet.

Coaches Tyler Cobb and Susan Tremain led the Islanders. Coach Susan was recognized for her 47 years of coaching the Alameda Islanders, and received a Special Olympics jacket.
