All Rise Alameda [1] and Indivisible Alameda [2] are joining forces to produce and distribute 6,000 “No Kings Since 1776” flags at the 4th of July parade — and they’re asking the community to help make it happen.
[3]The message on the flags is a nod to the heart of the American experiment — the bold, revolutionary idea that no one person should hold unchecked power over a free people. That idea was worth fighting for in 1776. These groups believe it’s still worth celebrating and defending in 2026.
“We are reclaiming our flags,” said Shalom Bruhn, co-founder of Indivisible Alameda. “We want to bring the community together in uplifting activities like crafting and singing. And we invite everyone to join us, whether assembling flags, marching with us, or volunteering to hand them out along the parade route.”
Flag assembly events
Making 6,000 flags takes a village, and that’s the point, according to organizers. Alameda All Rise and Indivisible Alameda are hosting a series of community flag assembly events — a mix of public gatherings and house parties — where neighbors can come together, roll up their sleeves, sing a few songs, and be part of something bigger.
The first public events are right around the corner:
- Sunday, June 14 (Flag Day) | Noon to 3 p.m., at Project Burger, 2319 Central Avenue, next to the Alameda Theatre.
- Saturday June 20 | 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., at the Home of Truth Cottage, 1707 Alameda Avenue, (behind the main building on 1300 Grand Street).
You’re invited to come for the flag-making, stay for the community. All are welcome. No experience is necessary, just a love of democracy and maybe an appetite for a good burger.
More house parties and public assembly events will be announced in the coming weeks. To find out about upcoming events, volunteer to host a house party, or learn how to support the effort, visit the Indivisible Alameda [2] website.
Volunteer at the 4th of July Parade
Alameda’s 4th of July parade is the longest Independence Day parade in the United States, drawing an expected 60,000 visitors along the route. That’s 60,000 opportunities to put a flag in someone’s hand and a smile on their face.
Alameda All Rise and Indivisible Alameda are looking for volunteers to march with their contingent and to help distribute flags along the parade route. It’s a joyful, easy way to be part of the day and to stand with your neighbors in celebrating the values that have always made this country worth fighting for.
